5 Fire Alarm Faults Facility Teams Ignore — Until It’s Too Late

A fire alarm panel showing a trouble light is not a nuisance. It is the system telling you that some part of it can no longer do its job. Yet on most audits we arrive to find a panel that has been buzzing, silenced and ignored for weeks.
1. Ground Faults
A ground fault means a circuit conductor is contacting earth, usually through damaged insulation or water ingress. The loop may still appear to work — until a second fault takes the whole circuit down. Trace and repair it; do not silence it.
2. Open Circuit on a Detection Loop
An open circuit means devices past the break are no longer being polled. That corridor of detectors is effectively absent, and nothing on the panel will tell you which rooms are now unprotected unless you check the loop map.
3. Low or Failed Battery
Standby batteries must carry the system through a mains failure — typically 24 hours of supervision plus alarm load. A low-battery trouble means your panel will not survive the power cut that so often accompanies an electrical fire.
4. Dirty or Drifting Detectors
Addressable detectors report their own contamination. Left long enough, a dirty detector either false-alarms repeatedly or is quietly disabled by staff who are tired of it — both outcomes end with a space that is no longer protected.
5. Disabled Zones Never Re-enabled
Zones are routinely isolated for hot works or contractor activity. The failure is procedural: nobody re-enables them. We regularly find zones isolated months earlier during a fit-out nobody remembers.
Every disabled zone we have ever found was disabled for a good reason. None of them were re-enabled for one.

- Keep an isolation register — nothing gets disabled without a scheduled restore date
- Review the panel event history monthly, not just the current display
- Escalate any fault unresolved after 48 hours
